The rotary, operating assembly of a valve has a ratchet coupled thereto for common rotation therewith, and a pawl-operating solenoid is coupled to a temperature-operated switch. The switch has a probe which senses the temperature of through-flowing fluid and, upon the probe sensing a given setpoint. opens the normally -closed switch. In turn, the normally -energized solenoid releases the pawl for engagement with the ratchet. As a result, the operating assembly is locked in the opening direction.
