A method is provided for characterizing emulsion stability to evaluate suitability of the emulsion for use as a drilling fluid in drilling subterranean boreholes. The method provides a supplement or alternative to the standard method of determining Electrical Stability of the emulsion. In the method of the invention, Breakdown Energy is calculated. Breakdown Energy can be measured at the same test point as Electrical Stability. A digital storage oscilloscope and a computer are used in addition to an electrical stability meter.

L'invention concerne un procédé permettant de caractériser la stabilité d'une émulsion pour déterminer si cette dernière peut être utilisée dans le forage d'un trou de forage souterrain. Ce procédé constitue un procédé alternatif ou supplémentaire par rapport au procédé habituel de détermination de la stabilité électrique de l'émulsion. Le procédé selon l'invention consiste à calculer une énergie de décomposition. Cette dernière peut être mesurée au même point test que la stabilité électrique. Un oscilloscope à mémoire numérique et un ordinateur sont utilisés outre l'appareil de mesure de la stabilité électrique.
