Methods and apparatus are provided for facilitating the sale and distribution of handmade rugs. High resolution images are obtained of rugs (31) in the inventories of many rug merchants. The rugs are classified based on their age, size, color, condition, layout, pattern, the type of pile and foundation materials, the knot, their overall design, and where they were made. Product identifiers for rugs are derived from their attributes. Then the images and attribute data are stored in a database (33). The database may be searched based on the attributes. Alternatively, searches may be performed graphically.

L'invention concerne des procédés et un dispositif facilitant la vente et la distribution de carpettes de fabrication artisanale. On obtient des images haute résolution de carpettes (31) provenant des stocks de nombreux vendeurs de carpettes. Ces carpettes sont classées sur la base des critères suivants: âge, taille, couleur, état, présentation, motif, type de velours, matières de base, noeud, conception d'ensemble et lieu de fabrication. Des identificateurs de produits destinés aux carpettes sont dérivés de ces attributs. Les images et les données d'attributs sont ensuite stockées dans une base de données (33). Cette base de données peut être consultée sur la base desdits attributs. Dans un autre mode de réalisation, les recherches peuvent s'effectuer graphiquement.
