2059265 9112257 PCTABS00006 In accordance with the methods of the present invention, 6-, 5- and 4- carbon sugars and sugar derivatives are synthesized from arene diols by various permutations of epoxidation, hydroxylation, reduction, carbon center inversion, olefination and cyclization reactions which add and remove carbon atoms from a given carbon moiety, create chiral carbon centers, provide functionalities, change the oxidation state of carbon centers, change the stereometric orientation around carbon centers and form cyclic moieties. The resulting sugars and sugar derivatives can be used as produced or to synthesize other sugars, sugar derivatives, amino acids and other useful compounds.
