A method and apparatus for monitoring a gaseous environment for the presence of cellular material; more particularly an apparatus and method that is capable of providing a measure of presence and/or numbers of cellular microorganisms, such as bacterial cells, in a large volume of air such as in a warehouse or production facility or in an open air location where bacterial presence is suspected. The method and apparatus of the invention are particularly provided for determining the likelihood of pathogenic material being present in an environment by batch or on-line measurement of cell numbers. In the latter format, a continuous monitoring of an environment for presence of pathogens is effected. The apparatus comprises a continuous flow luminometer preferably fed by a cyclone or high velocity virtual impactor and lytic and luminescence reagents which detect the amount of ATP or adenylate kinase present in a sample of air.
Méthode et appareil de surveillance de matériau cellulaire dans un environnement gazeux; plus particulièrement un appareil et une méthode capables de fournir une mesure de la présence et/ou du nombre de micro-organismes cellulaires, comme des cellules bactériennes, dans un grand volume d'air, par exemple dans un entrepôt, une installation de production ou un emplacement situé à l'air libre, dans lesquels on soupçonne une présence bactérienne. Cette méthode et cet appareil sont particulièrement destinés à déterminer la probabilité de présence d'un matériau pathogène dans un environnement à l'aide d'une mesure sur des échantillons ou d'une mesure en continu du nombre de cellules. Dans le cas de la mesure en continu, on effectue une surveillance continue de la présence d'agents pathogènes d'un environnement. Cet appareil comprend un luminomètre à circulation alimenté de préférence par un impacteur virtuel à grande vitesse ou un cyclone et des réactifs lytiques et de luminescence qui permettent de détecter le niveau d'ATP ou d'adénylate-kinase présent dans un échantillon d'air.
