The present invention provides methods and reagents for identification, separation and characterization of embryonic stem cells using markers previously recognized as germ cell specific. One currently preferred marker is the DAZL marker now shown to be expressed in multipotent and pluripotent stem cells. Antibodies and other agents, capable of binding the novel marker and useful for selecting these stem cells are also provided as well as diagnostic and therapeutic applications of pluripotent stem cells selected according to the present invention.

L'invention porte sur des procédés et des réactifs d'identification, séparation et caractérisation de cellules souches embryonnaires à l'aide de marqueurs préalablement reconnus comme spécifiques de cellules germinales. L'un des marqueurs actuels préférés est le marqueur DAZL dont on vient de montrer qu'il s'exprimait dans des cellules germinales multipotentes et pluripotentes. L'invention porte également sur des anticorps et autres agents pouvant se fixer au nouveau marqueur et servir à sélectionner lesdites cellules germinales, ainsi que sur des applications diagnostiques et thérapeutiques de cellules germinales pluripotentes sélectionnées à l'aide de la présente invention.
