Methods and apparatus for routing a packet in a network are described. The network has a topology characterized by a hierarchical structure of nodes including n layers. L represents a layer in the structure and is an integer with L=0 representing a lowest layer and L=n-1 representing a highest layer. The method includes receiving at least a packet head-er of a packet at a first node and based on the packet header, determining whether to transmit the packet to a second node in either layer L, layer L+1 or layer L-1. The packet can be transmitted to the second node as soon as the packet is received at the first node without waiting to receive the entire packet and with-out copying the packet prior to transmission from the first node.

L'invention concerne des procédés et un appareil pour router un paquet dans un réseau. Le réseau présente une topologie caractérisée par une structure hiérarchique de noeuds comprenant n couches. L représente une couche dans la structure et est un nombre entier, L=0 représentant une couche inférieure et L=n-1 représentant une couche supérieure. Le procédé consiste à recevoir au moins un en-tête de paquet d'un paquet au niveau d'un premier noeud et en fonction de l'en-tête de paquet, à déterminer si le paquet doit être transmis à un deuxième noeud dans la couche L, la couche L+1 ou la couche L-1. Le paquet peut être transmis au deuxième noeud dès lors qu'il est reçu au niveau du premier noeud sans attendre que le paquet soit reçu dans sa totalité et sans copier le paquet préalablement à la transmission depuis le premier noeud.
