A handpiece having a set of longitudinally vibrating piezoelectric elements. To obtain oscillatory or torsional movement, a series of generally parallel, diagonal slits is provided circumferentially around the ultrasonic horn. The slits translate longitudinal vibrations into oscillatory or torsional vibrations.
