An X-ray inspection system comprises an X-ray source (1) disposed to irradiate an object to be inspected (4) with a beam of X-rays in the form of a fan projected from the source (1) through the object (4), detection means (6) capable of discriminating between the intensities of X-rays coherently scattered through the object (4) at different angles to produce an output signal dependent on the intensity of the X-rays scattered through each of those angles and analysing means (not shown) operably connected to the detection means (6) to process the output signal to determine the presence of X-rays coherently scattered through one or more pre-determined angles. Collimation means (23) is provided between the detection means (6) and the object (4) and is adapted to pass only X-rays coherently scattered at the different angles from a limited voxel (volume element) depth centred at point P. Movement of the collimator (23) along the direction of the beam together with translation of the object by e.g. a conveyor (5) in the direction (22) allows the whole volume of the object, such as an item of baggage, to be scanned.
Un système d'inspection par rayons X comprend une source de rayons X (1) réalisée pour émettre sur un objet à inspecter (4) un faisceau de rayons X se présentant sous la forme d'un cône partant de la source (1) et traversant l'objet (4), des moyens de détection (6) capables de distinguer entre les intensités des rayons X dispersés d'une manière cohérente à travers l'objet (4) suivant différents angles, pour produire un signal de sortie dépendant de l'intensité des rayons X dispersés suivant chacun de ces angles et des moyens d'analyse (non représentés) coopérant avec les moyens de détection (6) pour traiter le signal de sortie et déterminer la présence de rayons X dispersés d'une manière cohérente suivant un ou plusieurs angles prédéterminés. Un moyen de collimation (23) est prévu entre les moyens de détection (6) et l'objet (4) et il permet le passage seulement des rayons X dispersés d'une manière cohérente suivant différents angles depuis un voxel (élément de volume) à profondeur limitée et centré sur le point P. Le mouvement du collimateur (23) suivant la direction du faisceau associé à un mouvement de translation de l'objet assuré par exemple par un transporteur (5) dans la direction (22) permet d'examiner tout le volume d'un article, tel qu'un bagage.
