An apparatus for providing a thermal treatment to a product, such as food, is described. The apparatus includes a reaction vessel (210) to facilitate the mixing and reaction of a first component and a second component, wherein said reaction vessel (210) includes a flexible wall portion, said reaction vessel (210) comprising: a first compartment (310) used to contain the first component, such as water; a second compartment (320) used to contain the second component, such as lime; a membrane (301) positioned between said first compartment (310) and said second compartment (320), wherein said membrane (301), when intact, prevents fluid communication between said first compartment (310) and said second compartment (320), and wherein said membrane (301), when pierced, allows fluid communication between said first compartment (310) and said second compartment (320); and an actuator (330) having piercing elements (409) disposed between said flexible wall portion and said membrane (301), such that said flexible wall portion, when flexed, engages said actuator (330) to move said membrane (301) from a intact state to a pierced state, to permit the first component and the second component to mix.
