A stinger for attachment to the lower end of a cylindrical shroud for a submersible pump of an artificial lift assembly comprises an elongate tubular member having screened openings to permit passage of well fluids into the stinger and thence to the pump while preventing the entry of larger debris particles. The stinger is substantially smaller in diameter than the shroud, so as to create an annular debris chamber between the stinger and the inner wall of the wellbore or casing into which the stinger is to be inserted. The stinger may a guide member to facilitate manoeuvring the lift assembly past or into lateral wells branching off from a main wellbore. The guide member may have an offset lower end to facilitate entry, or avoidance of entry, into a lateral well. Alternatively, the lower end of the guide member may have a large bullnose section to facilitate passage of the lift assembly past lateral well openings.
