A unitary composite air bag cover (20) including a one-piece thermoplastic elastomeric body (16) and a one-piece outer layer (30) molded from a thermoplastic material compatible with the thermoplastic elastomer of the body is provided so that a bottom contact surface (32) of the outer layer (30) bonds with a front contact surface (22) of the front panel by diffusion between the contact surfaces thereof. In a method of the present invention, the resulting air bag cover is cooled beneath the softening point of both plastics so that a molecular concentration gradient is formed at an interface between the first and second plastics to bond the first and second plastics by diffusion within a mold cavity of a mold separate from the mold cavity of another mold which is utilized to injection-mold either the elastomeric body or the outer layer.
L'invention décrit une protection unitaire composite pour airbag (20) comportant un corps (16) d'un seul tenant fait d'un élastomère thermoplastique et une couche extérieure (30) d'un seul tenant moulée dans un matériau thermoplastique compatible avec l'élastomère thermoplastique du corps, de sorte qu'une surface de contact inférieure (32) de la couche extérieure (30) est unie à une surface de contact avant (22) de la face avant par diffusion entre leurs surfaces de contact. Dans un procédé de la présente invention, la protection pour airbag obtenue est refroidie en deçà du point de ramollissement des deux plastiques, de sorte qu'un gradient de concentration moléculaire se forme à une interface entre les premier et second plastiques pour lier ces derniers par diffusion à l'intérieur d'un creux de moule séparé d'un creux de moule d'un autre moule utilisé pour mouler par injection soit le corps élastomère soit la couche extérieure.
