A signpost having first and second supports. A first flange is rigidly secured to an end of the first support, generally coaxial with the first support and extending radially outwardly therefrom. A second flange is rigidly secured to anend of the second support, generally coaxial with the second support and extending radially outwardly therefrom. The first and second flanges have a plurality of holes therethrough generally adjacent an outer edge thereof. The holes through the first flange register with the holes through the second flange when the flanges are placed facing each other. A spacer is mounted between the first and second flanges radially inwardly of the holes for spacing the flanges apart. Shearable fasteners are inserted through the holes in the first and second flanges to secure the first and second flanges to each other with the spacer interspersed therebetween; The materials and dimensions of the first and second supports, the first and second flanges, the spacer and the shear fasteners are selected to cause theshear fasteners to fail in response to a pre-determined lateral force applied to the first support at a pre-determined distance from the flange without substantial damage occurring to the flanges, the first and second supports and the spacer.
