A user interface subsystem enables a digital computer system to selectively provide a user interface with one or more of a plurality of look and feels. The user interface subsystem comprises at least one user interface element, a plurality of look and feels and a multiplexer subsystem. The user interface element is configured to generate user interface information, and each of the look and feels is configured to use the user interface information in connection with providing respective types of user interfaces for the digital computer system. The multiplexer subsystem is configured to couple the user interface information from the user interface element to selected ones of the look and feels thereby to provide selected ones of the respective types of user interfaces for the operator.
