This invention relates to traction assembly for use as wheel replacement for a heavy vehicle. The traction assembly uses an endless traction band, a sprocket wheel and a plurality of wheels for propulsion. More particularly, the traction assembly comprises a sprocket wheel, a support structure for supporting a plurality of road wheels and idler wheels and a traction band tensioned around the sprocket wheels, the idler wheels and the road wheels. The support structure further comprises a first portion and a second portion, the first portion and the second portion being pivotally connected to the frame of the vehicle and being preferably pivotally connected together.
