The present invention relates to the cloning of a novel cDNA sequence encoding the .epsilon. receptor subunit of the GABAA receptor; to stably co-transfected eukaryotic cell lines capable of expressing a GABAA receptor, which receptor comprises the novel .epsilon. receptor subunit; and to the use of such cell lines in screening for and designing medicaments which act upon the GABAA receptor.
