A method of electric arc welding which reduces startup porosity and arc wandering comprises applying a current between an electrode (14) and a workpiece (22) to be welded, alternating the current at a frequency of about 1 to about 1.5 megahertz, supplying a shielding gas (30) generated from a flux covering (28) of the electrode (14) to a vicinity between the electrode (14) and an area of the workpiece (22) to be welded, and bringing the electrode (14) sufficiently close to the area to be welded to strike an arc between the electrode and the area to be welded without touching the electrode (14) to area to be welded.

L'invention porte sur un procédé de soudage à l'arc électrique qui réduit la porosité au démarrage et la divagation de l'arc, consistant à appliquer une tension entre une électrode (14) et une pièce de travail (22) à souder en alternant la tension selon une fréquence comprise entre environ 1 et environ 1,5 mégahertz, en amenant un gaz de protection (30) produit depuis un enrobage (28) de l'électrode (14) jusqu'à une zone située à proximité entre cette électrode (14) et la partie de la pièce de travail (22) à souder, puis en rapprochant cette électrode (14) de la partie susmentionnée suffisamment pour diriger un arc entre elles sans que l'électrode (14) ne vienne toucher la partie à souder.
