An elastomeric sleeve, for retaining and attaching a prothesis to a stump of an amputee. Typically, the sleeve is made of polyurethane, soft elastomer reinforced with a nylon or polyurethane mesh. This reinforcement, among other things, eliminates the possibility of support failure caused by a small tear or cut. The polyurethane elastomer is selected to have a resilience, load bearing capability and energy and impact absorption similar or close to that of the enclosed limb adjacent to the sleeve to reduce pressure points. The elastomer is also selected to be able to stretch up to 700% to 1,600% an original dimension but return to within five percent or less of the original dimension. These stretch characteristics are modified by a special mesh pattern, which permits a greater amount of stretch around the limb circumferentially than along the limb. This results in the limb remaining tightly secured to a prosthesis as the sleeve extends and compresses longitudinally in use, and also eases the task of stretching and installing the sleeve over the stump and prosthesis. This combination also provides a sealing grip around the stump while providing a soft and friendly attachment.

Le manchon est constitué d'un élastomère souple en polyuréthanne renforcé d'un filet en nylon ou en polyuréthanne, éliminant ainsi, par exemple, le risque de perte de support causé par une petite déchirure ou une coupure. On a choisi l'élastomère de polyuréthanne pour sa résilience, sa résistance à la charge et sa capacité d'absorber l'énergie et les chocs semblable (ou voisine) à celle de l'attache-membres intérieure, près du manchon, afin de réduire les points de pression, mais également pour sa capacité à s'étirer de 700 à 1 600 p. cent et à reprendre cinq p. cent ou moins de sa dimension première. Cela permet à l'attache-membres de rester bien fixé à la prothèse lorsque le manchon se détend et se comprime dans le sens de la longueur et facilite l'étirement et la pose du manchon autour du moignon et de la prothèse. Cette combinaison offre une adhérence hermétique autour du moignon tout en assurant une fixation souple et agréable.
