A compound is described that is useful as a dispersant for inorganic pigments and metallic flake pigments in waterborne coatings. The compound comprises a polymeric backbone having a pigment-interactive substituent and a stabilizing substituent. The pigment-interactive substituent has at least one functionality selected from the group consisting of (see above formulas) wherein A1, A2, A3, and A4 are as defined herein. The stabilizing substituent includes the structure (see above formula) wherein D1, D2, R1, R2, R3, m, and n are as defined herein.
