The invention relates to a process for treating a spent nickel-based absorbent and for extending the useful life of nickel-based absorbents. The process for treating a spent absorbent material which originally consists of a supported mixture of nickel oxide and metallic nickel comprises the step of heating the spent material under a flow of non-oxidizing gas at a temperature of between 150°C to 450°C.
