This invention concerns a process to obtain .beta. hydroxy carbonyls and/or .alpha. - .beta unsaturated carbonyls, characterized by placing at least one aldehyde or one ketone in contact with a solid catalyst of generic formula (I): ¢Mg2+)1-x (Al3+)x(OH-)2!X+ ¢(OH-!x-(H2O)n (I) in which: 0.20 x 0.33 and n < 1. The - unsaturated carbonyls thus obtained can be subjected to either selective hydrogenation, using known catalysts, to yield corresponding saturated carbonyls such as aldehydes or ketones with a molecular weight greater than those used, or to total hydrogenation to yield the corresponding saturated alcohols. These aldehydes, ketones or alcohols are used as intermediate chemicals in various industries or as solvents in the perfume industry.

L'invention concerne un procédé d'obtention de composés carbonylés .beta. hydroxy et/ou de composés carbonylés .alpha. - .beta. insaturés, caractérisé en ce que l'on met au moins un aldéhyde ou une cétone au contact d'un catalyseur solide de formule générale (I): [( Mg2+)1-x (Al3+)x(OH-)2]X+ [(OH-]x-(H20)n (I) dans laquelle: 0,20 ~ x ~ 0,33 et n < 1. Les composés carbonylés .alpha. - .beta. insaturés obtenus peuvent être soumis soit à une hydrogénation sélective, en utilisant des catalyseurs connus, pour donner les composés carbonylés saturés correspondants comme des aldéhydes ou cétones ayant un poids moléculaire plus élevé que ceux ou celles qu'on met en oeuvre, soit à une hydrogénation totale pour donner les alcools saturés correspondants. Ces aldéhydes ou cétones ou alcools sont employés industriellement comme intermédiaires de synthèse ou comme solvants ou dans l'industrie des parfumeries.
