An improved process is disclosed for the selective disproportionation of toluene. The process preferably uses a disproportionation catalyst comprising a pentasil type zeolite such as MFI that is bound with aluminum-phosphate. Running the process at a toluene conversion greater than 30 wt-% and at a hydrogen-to-hydrocarbon ratio less than 3.0, and especially a ratio of 0.1 to 1.0, improves the maximum yield of para-xylene. Periodic rejuvenation by increasing the hydrogen-to-hydrocarbon ratio removes some carbon deposits and restores catalyst activity. An inert diluent gas assists in selective pre-coking of the catalyst as well.

L'invention concerne un procédé amélioré pour la dismutation sélective du toluène. Le procédé utilise de préférence un catalyseur de dismutation qui comprend une zéolithe de type pentasil telle que MFI qui est lié avec un phosphate d'aluminium. La réalisation du procédé à une conversion du toluène supérieure à 30 % en poids et à un rapport hydrogène/hydrocarbure inférieur à 3,0, et notamment à un rapport de 0,1 à 1,0, améliore le rendement maximum en para-xylène. Un renouvellement périodique par augmentation du rapport hydrogène/hydrocarbure permet d'éliminer une partie des dépôts de carbone et de restaurer l'activité du catalyseur. Un gaz diluant inerte contribue également à la pré-cokéfaction sélective du catalyseur.
