2045183 9011435 PCTABS00002 A fuel combustion system (12) for an Otto-cycle internal combustion engine (10) including a main combustion chamber (14) and an auxiliairy combustion chamber (26). Timing of ignition is effected by opening a control valve device (28) during a latter portion of the compression phase which permits a pressurized combustible mixture (18) to flow from the main combustion chamber (14) and into the auxiliary combustion chamber (26) where the combustible mixture therein is ignited. Hot burning gases emanating from the auxiliary combustion chamber (26) through a suitable directing device (32) provide single or multiple and penetrating sources of ignition for the bulk of the combustible mixture (18) present in the main combustion chamber (14). This arrangement provides a very reliable and long life ignition system for Otto-cycle engines and is especially advantageous for engines which burn a relatively lean combustible mixture.
