The method includes providing a therapeutic agent that is a non-immunoglobulin polypeptide, soluble in the circulation, and has the ability to bind endotoxin-related substances; and administering to the circulation of a subject a therapeutic amount of the agent. This conjugate has reduced toxicity and reduced pathogenicity relative to unconjugated endotoxin-related substances. In preferred embodiments, the therapeutic agent is at least a portion of the extracellular portion of the scavenger receptor protein.
