In a procedure for signing a message, in which a secret key is used for signing, and in which it is possible to validate the signature with the help of an open, non-secret key, provision is made such that the open key is a number n that is the product of two large primes p and q, the secret key consists of at least one of the two primes; one polynomial of the form P(x) - x1 + a? - ?x?-? ... +a?x+a? is formed, the coefficients of which, a?-?...a? are formed from the message, taking a random number into account; additional polynomials p(x) mod p and p(x) mod q are derived from the polynomial, the zero positions of these being determined in each end body GF(p) or GF(q), respectively; the zero positions for one or more solutions z of the equation [P(x) mod n] = 0 are combined; the random number and the solution z or the selected solutions z are appended as the signature of the message.
