Thermochromic compounds, their preparation and the use thereof Abstract of the Disclosure There are disclosed compounds Image (I) Image (IV), wherein R1, R2 and R3 are each independently of one another hydrogen, a C1-C12alkyl group, a C1-C12alkoxy group, a C5-C8cycloalkyl group, a C5-C8cycloalkoxy group, a C5-C8cycloalkylthio group, a C6-C10aryl group, a C6-C10aryloxy group, a C6-C10arylthio group, nitro, halogen, cyano, -COOH, -COOR7, -NR8R9, or -CONR8R9, where R7 is C1-C20alkyl, C5-C8cycloalkyl, phenyl or phenyl-C1-C4alkyl, and R8 and R9 are each independently of the other hydrogen, C1-C8alkyl, phenyl or phenyl-C1-C4alkyl, X is nitrogen or CR4, Y is nitrogen or CR5 and Z is nitrogen or CR6, and R4, R5 and R6 are each independently of one another hydrogen, a straight-chain or branched C1-C12alkyl group or a C6-C10aryl group, with the proviso that, if X is CR4 and Y is CR5 and Z is nitrogen or CR6, or if Y is CR5 and Z is CR6 and X is nitrogen or CR4, then each pair of substituents R4 and R5 and R5 and R6 form a group -CH=C(R10)-C(R11)=CH- or a tetramethylene group, wherein R10 and R11 are each independently of the other hydrogen, C1-C6alkyl, phenyl or phenyl-C1-C4alkyl. The compounds are suitable for use as active components in thermal information recording systems, especially for laser-optical information recording media.
