An injection molding apparatus comprises a manifold having a manifold channel for receiving a melt stream of moldable material under pressure. The melt stream is delivered to a nozzle having a nozzle channel, which communicates with an outlet of the manifold channel to receive the melt stream. A mold cavity receives the melt stream from the nozzle through a mold gate. A valve pin extends through the nozzle channel and is actuable by a piston to selectively open and close the mold gate. A locking mechanism is coupled to the piston for selectively locking the piston in a position in which the mold gate is closed.
