2112990 9301010 PCTABS00019 A combination of a vacuum extraction source (3) (to withdraw volatilized contaminants and fluids) and electric current (to heat in situ volatile contaminants and geologic strata) to remove contaminants from the vadose zone. Raising the soil temperature and thereby imparting heat energy to the contaminants makes the vacuum extraction source (3) of the contaminants more effective. Also, heating certain geologic strata, such as a clay, that resist vacuum air flow, tends to speed volatilization within such strata, speed the drying of such strata, and improve the effectiveness of the vacuum extraction source (3) therein. Various placement strategies for electrodes (7) are used in this invention to accommodate specific site conditions.
