A method whereby pancreas induced in vitro which is useful in development engineering or organ engineering and from which findings concerning the differentiation or formation mechanism of pancreas can be obtained, pancreas for transplantation which makes it possible to evaluate whether or not pancreas induced in vitro can actually function in vivo, or pancreas induced in vitro which is applicable to the diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic diseases of higher animals can be artificially induced at a high efficiency from a gastrula other than the prospective region of pancreas. A prospective ectodermal region of undifferentiated cells of late blastula, which forms not pancreas but irregular epiderm when incubated in vitro, is excised from late blastula of Xenopus, treated with activin and, after 3 to 5 hours, treated with retinoic acid. Then, these explants are stationarily incubated in Steinberg's solution containing BSA to thereby convert the fate toward pancreas and form morphological and functional pancreas at a high efficiency in vitro.

Une zone ectodermique cible de cellules non différentiées de blastula, qui ne forme pas le pancréas mais un épiderme irrégulier lorsqu'elle est incubée <i>in vitro</i>, est excisée de la blastula de <i>Xenopus</i>, traitée à l'activine et, après 3 à 5 heures, traitée à l'acide rétinoïque. Lesdits explants sont ensuite incubés de manière stationnaire dans une solution de Steinberg contenant BSA, de sorte qu'ils soient convertis en pancréas et qu'un pancréas morphologique et fonctionnel soit formé <i>in vitro</i> avec une grande efficacité.
