The invention relates to a method of using diffuse optical tomography and oxygen or dye in a stroke patient, or a patient suspected of having a stroke, to detect ischemic events or bleeds in the brain. The patient is imaged using a plurality of spatially separated light sources (110) for coupling light into tissue and detectors (120) for detecting diffuse light transmitted through the tissue and subsequently analyzed by analyzer (140).
