A mass spectrometer 1 is disclosed comprising a multi-mode quadrupole rod set 6,6'. In a first mode of operation the quadrupole rod set 6 is operated as a mass filter to selectively transmit ions a having desired mass to charge ratios to an ion detector 7. In a second mode of operation the quadrupole rod set 6' operates as a drift or time of flight region in which ions 8 which have been pulsed into the drift or time of flight region become temporally separated according to their mass to charge ratios. In the second mode of operation the ion detector 7 determines the time of flight of ions passing through the quadrupole rod set 6'.
