A protection circuit and corresponding methodology are provided for managing the relationship between a battery charger and a lithium ion battery based upon the current potential of the lithium ion battery. The apparatus manages the relationship between the battery charger and the lithium ion battery such that the potential of the lithium ion battery is maintained within an operating range and battery life and performance is optimized. The protection circuit includes a first field effect transistor (FET) acting as a switch that is connected to the lithium ion battery and the battery charger that allows the battery charger to charge the lithium ion battery and allow the lithium ion battery to discharge whe n the current potential of the lithium ion battery is within the operating range. A second FET acting as a switch is connected in parallel with said first FET and limits charging of the lithium ion battery by the battery charger when the current potential of the lithium ion battery is greater than the operating range and third FET acting as a switch is connected in parallel with said first and second FETs that limits discharging of the lithium ion battery when the current potential of the lithium ion battery is less than the operating range.
