A fuel supply (40) for a fuel cell comprises a fuel gauge (78, 80) for determining the remaining amount of fuel. The fuel gauge (78, 80) is coupled to an electrical circuit and has a property that is readable by the electrical circuit that relates to the amount of fuel remaining in the fuel supply (40). The property can include a measure of electrical capacitance, magnetic field strength, semi-conducting resistance, be-metal resistance, and oscillating magnetic field strength. The fuel gauge (78, 80) is functional at any orientation of the fuel supply (40).
