Carbon dioxide is sequestered in a formation using a dual completion and injection method that reduces or eliminates upward leak rates of the sequestered carbon dioxide. The dual completion and injection method involves the injection of a benign fluid such as brine (water) into a permeable layer of the formation located above the sequestration layer and which is separated form the sequestration layer by a nearly impermeable layer. The water is preferably injected at the same time the carbon dioxide is injected.

Le dioxyde de carbone est séquestré dans une formation en utilisant un procédé double de complétion et dinjection qui réduit ou supprime les taux de fuite vers le haut du dioxyde de carbone séquestré. Le procédé double de complétion et dinjection implique linjection dun fluide neutre tel que la saumure (eau) dans une couche perméable de la formation située au-dessus de la couche de séquestration et qui est séparée de la couche de séquestration par une couche pratiquement imperméable. Leau est de préférence injectée en même temps que le dioxyde de carbone.
