The air brake assembly on commercial vehicles presently require the truck driver to determine, manually, whether the slack adjusters are out-of-adjustment regardless of whether there is a manual or automatic slack adjuster system in place. There is no cab display that alerts drivers of air braked commercial vehicles when maintenance related brake problems have reduced the retarding capacity of the brake system of the commercial vehicle. The "Brake Alert" with reduce the subjective nature of the detection system for non-fuctioning air brake assemblies and will provide an early warning system to notify drivers of commercial vehicles that the air brake assemblies of the commercial vehicle may not be functioning within normal limits. In this invention, a series of or one gauging system will be attached to the pushrod, s-cam shaft, brake lining and/or brake chamber of each air brake assembly on a commercial vehicle. If the push rod extends beyond the maximum allowed distance on application of the service (foundation) brakes then a switch will activate a warning light in the cab of the commercial vehicle. Equally, if the s-cam shaft does not rotate within normal limits when the service (foundation) brake is applied then a switch will activate a warning light in the cab of the commercial vehicle. Still yet, if the brake application does not generate a minimum temperature rise gradient upon application of the service (foundation) brake then a switch will activate a warning light in the cab of the commercial vehicle. The driver, will, in turn, be notified that a particular brake assembly is not functioning within normal limits and a manual check and/or adjustment is needed immediately. In higher end models, a monitoring system will be attached to the gauging system(s) to record a history of the brake assembly malfunctions, which monitoring system can be accessed by a motor vehicle inspector, the owner of the commercial vehicle and/or the operator of the commercial vehicle.
