An image coding apparatus comprises a pixel bit length expansion converter (1001) for converting the bit precision of each pixel of an input image to output the converted input image and to output bit conversion information indicating the number of bits altered by the conversion, an image coder (10) for coding the converted input image to output image coding information, and a multiplexer (12) for multiplexing the bit conversion information and the image coding information.
