The monitoring system is based on the use of luminescence systems such as those produced by luminescent microorganisms. The apparatus comprises sampling means for obtaining a sample of the liquid, means for providing a continuous culture of organisms or cells for supplying luminescence reagents and detection means for detecting light emitted from the mixture.
