A method of controlling birefringence in a rib waveguide structure manufactured in silicon is described. The rib waveguide structure comprises an elongated rib element (4) having an upper face (5) and two side faces (6). According to the method, a blanket layer of silicon nitride (8) is formed to a predetermined thickness over the rib waveguide structure directly abutting the upper face (5) and side faces (6). The thickness of the blanket layer (8) is selected to control birefringence. A silicon rib waveguide structure incorporating such a layer (8) and an evanescent coupler structure are also described.

L'invention se rapporte à un procédé de commande de la biréfringence dans une structure de guide d'onde à nervure fabriquée en silicium. Cette structure de guide d'onde à nervure comporte une nervure oblongue (4) présentant une surface supérieure (5) et deux surfaces latérales (6). Conformément audit procédé, une couche de couverture en nitrure de silicium est formée de façon à posséder une épaisseur préétablie sur la structure du guide d'onde à nervure directement au contact des surfaces supérieure (5) et latérales (6). L'épaisseur de la couche de couverture (8) est sélectionnée de manière à permettre la commande de la biréfringence. L'invention se rapporte également à une structure de guide d'onde optique à nervure comprenant une telle couche (8) ainsi qu'une structure de couplage évanescente.
