89/102 -9- ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In a direct-current electric-arc furnace, the bottom contact, that is the hearth electrode (7,8,11), must be insulated from the metallic shell of the furnace vessel by insulating material. For this pur- pose, the bottom plate (11) carrying the bottom contact essentially forms the bottom of the furnace vessel. This bottom contact (11), with an insulating material (18), or a material (18) which is at least a poor electrical conductor, inbetween, rests on a part (17), projecting to the inside, of the metallic vessel shell (2). (Fig. 1)
