In a device for controlling a flow of metal from a casting vessel (2) into a casting mould (3), the inflow of metal is to be controlled by means of a stopper (5), which may be lifted and lowered, according to a preset program and/or by means of a bath-level measuring device (7). In order to eliminate from such a device any manual intervention at a stopper control lever at the start of casting or in the event of faults etc., a lifting rod (10) together with its vertical guide (12) and its computer-controlled electromechanical drive (13) is to be disposed in a module box (15). The module box (15) itself is exchangeably fastened to the casting vessel (2) by clamping elements (16). Furthermore, before casting begins, the stopper drive motor (13) is to be connected by means of electric plug-and-socket connections (37) to the control cabinet (34). From the start of casting, the stopper movement is controllable exclusively by means of the electric drive (13) and the latter by electric signals.
