The present invention is directed to a method for detecting abnormal lymphocytes said method comprising detect-ing an amount or expression of the FOXP2 gene in lymphocytes in a sample, wherein an increased amount or expression of the FOXP2 gene in said lymphocytes indicates the presence of abnormal lymphocytes. Additionally, the invention concerns a method for detecting or assessing a condition associated with the presence of abnormal lymphocytes. The methods of the invention may also be useful for diagnosing myeloma or MGUS or for determining the prognosis for patients with lymphoma, myeloma or MGUS. The severity of bone disease or bone colonisation of tumours may also be able to be predicted. Further, treatment of con-ditions associated with the presence of abnormal lymphocytes using an agent which inhibits FOXP2 expression and/or FOXP2 ac-tivity is provided. An antibody which binds to the N-terminus of FOXP2 has also been developed.

L'invention concerne une méthode de détection de lymphocytes anormaux, consistant à détecter la quantité ou l'expression du gène FOXP2 dans des lymphocytes contenus dans un échantillon, une quantité ou expression accrue du gène FOXP2 dans ces lymphocytes indiquant la présence de lymphocytes anormaux. L'invention concerne également une méthode de détection ou d'évaluation d'un état lié à la présence de lymphocytes anormaux. Les méthodes selon l'invention peuvent également servir à diagnostiquer le myélome ou la gammapathie monoclonale de signification indéterminée (MGUS) ou à déterminer un pronostic pour des patients atteints de lymphome, de myélome ou de MGUS. La gravité d'une maladie osseuse ou de la colonisation osseuse de tumeurs peut également être prédite. L'invention concerne encore le traitement d'états liés à la présence de lymphocytes anormaux au moyen d'un agent inhibant l'expression et/ou l'activité de FOXP2. À ces fins, un anticorps se liant à l'extrémité N-terminal de FOXP2 a également été mis au point.
