A blow molding apparatus (10) having a mold clamping apparatus (38) of the clam shell type, and having a linkage (57) controlling the opening and closing of the mold (18), the linkage being comprised of two links (58, 66) pivotally connected to each other and driven by a pneumatic or hydraulic cylinder (70). The links are configured to provide the cylinder with mechanical advantage so that little mold separation force is recognized at the cylinder.
