An easy, safe and inexpensive procedure for testing the presence of esophageal acid sensitivity in a patient involves having the patient swallow a controlled quantity of a weak acid solution and a similar-tasting controlled quantity of a neutral solution and recording the reactions or symptoms experienced by the patient during the drinking of each solution. The acid solution only should affect the sensitivity of the esophageal lining in patients with esophageal acid sensitivity, provoking heartburn and other related symptoms to include non-cardiac chest pain, but should not have any significant effect on patients without esophageal acid sensitivity. The neutral solution may be altered to stimulate the taste of the acid solution and reduce the effect the taste of the solutions may have on the test results.
Méthode facile d'emploi, sûre et peu coûteuse pour déceler la présence d'une sensibilité de l'oesophage aux acides chez un patient. On demande au patient d'avaler une quantité déterminée d'une solution acide faible, puis une quantité déterminée d'une solution neutre ayant un goût semblable, et l'on note dans chaque cas ses réactions ou ses symptômes. Seule la solution acide devrait avoir un effet sur la sensibilité de la muqueuse de l'oesophage des patients présentant une telle sensibilité, provoquant des brûlures d'estomac et autres symptômes connexes incluant des douleurs thoraciques non cardiaques; les patients ne présentant pas de sensibilité oesophagienne aux acides ne devraient ressentir aucun effet significatif. La solution neutre peut être modifiée pour simuler le goût de la solution acide et réduire l'effet que peut avoir le goût des solutions sur les résultats du test.
