A storage tank assembly in- cludes a storage tank (10) having a hollow interior (18) and also having access means (18A) for passage of a liquid into the hollow interior (18), at least one layer (11) of resilient mate- rial located within the hollow interior (18), bearing means (12, 24, 33, 47, 53) associated with said at least one layer (11, 32, 45, 52) of resilient ma- terial and actuating means (15, 23, 28, 54) to actuate movement of said bearing means (12, 24, 33, 47, 53) so as to compress and subsequently relax said at least one layer (11, 32, 45, 52) of resilient material so as to facilitate absorption of liquid passed into the hollow interior (18).
