A fused fibre optic 1 x 4 or 2 x 4 coupler in which four optical fibre segments (A, B, C, D) extend longi- tudinally beside each other in a cou- pling region in which the fibre seg- ments are at least partially fused to- gether to form an assembly exhibiting a close packed cross section in which the fibre cores (11) are centered sub- stantially at the corners of a four-sided polygon having a pair of opposite in- ternal acute angles substantially less than 90°.
