A refuse handling system (30) having a towable multipurpose trailer (36) and a refuse container (32) which mates with the trailer. The refuse container (32) is designed to receive and hold trash deposited at a remote waste collection site. The trailer (36) has a receiving platform (48) which tilts between a travel position and an inclined loading position. The trailer has a loading subassembly (70) for loading and unloading the refuse container (32). A power unit (94) is mounted on the trailer (36) to drive the loading subassembly (70). Once loaded, the trailer (36) transports the container (32) to a central waste disposal site. The refuse container has a refuse discharger (170) for emptying the container. A power transfer coupling (230) is provided between the trailer and the container. This provides one power unit on the trailer which functions to both load the refuse container and discharge refuse from the container.
