An elongated catheter device with a distal balloon assembly is adapted for endovascular insertion. Coolant injected through the device may directly cool tissue contacting the balloon (212), or may cool a separate internal chamber. In the first case, the coolant also inflates the balloon, and spent coolant is returned to the handle via a return passage extending through the body of the catheter.Plural balloons may be provided, wherein a secondary outer balloon (212) surrounds a primary inner balloon (203), the primary balloon being filled with coolant and acting as the cooling chamber. The secondary balloon is coupled to a vacuum return lumen (205) to serve as a robust leak containment device and thermal insulator around the cooling chamber.
L'invention concerne un cathéter allongé comprenant un ensemble ballon distal et conçu pour une insertion endovasculaire. Un réfrigérant injecté au moyen dudit cathéter peut, dans différents modes de réalisation, refroidir directement des tissus au contact avec le ballon, ou peut refroidir une chambre interne séparée. Dans le premier cas, le réfrigérant gonfle aussi le ballon, et le réfrigérant utilisé est renvoyé à la poignée par l'intermédiaire d'un canal de retour s'étendant à travers le corps du cathéter. On peut utiliser plusieurs ballons : un ballon extérieur secondaire entoure un premier ballon intérieur ; le premier ballon est rempli avec un réfrigérant et constitue la chambre de réfrigération et le second ballon est couplé à une lumière de retour sous vide, pour servir de dispositif robuste empêchant les fuites et d'un isolateur thermique autour de la chambre de réfrigération. Plusieurs configurations, telles qu'une modification de surface de l'interface entre les ballons, ou bien le placement de particules, de revêtements, de bobines ou de mailles extensibles à l'interface entre les ballons, peuvent être utilisées à cet effet.
