The invention provides a method for testing the integrity of a security cap placed over a needle of a syringe, comprising the steps of (A) applying a high voltage to the needle, which acts as a first electrode, and to an second electrode placed outside the security cap; and (B) monitoring the current flow between the electrodes; wherein if a predetermined current level is exceeded the integrity of the security cap is deemed to be compromised, with the proviso that the security cap is made from a material having a higher dielectric constant than that of the ambient gas.
