Semi-permeable membranes made from synthetic polymers are treated with a non-leaching antimicrobial agent to prevent bio-fouling and bacterial breakthrough. The semi-permeable membranes include a polymeric material and a non-leaching antimicrobial agent that is incorporated into and homogeneously distributed throughout the polymeric material. In one embodiment, the polymeric material is cellulose acetate. In another embodiment, which utilizes thin film composite polyamide membranes (10), the antimicrobial agent is incorporated in a microporous polysulfone layer (14) that is sandwiched between a reinforcing fabric (16) and an ultrathin polyamide material (12). The invention also includes a treatment of flat and hollow fiber semi-permeable membranes made with polysulfones and polyvinylidene fluoride. The membranes may be used in reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, and microfiltration applications.

L'invention concerne des membranes semi-perméables réalisées en polymères synthétiques. Ces membranes sont traitées par un agent antimicrobien dépourvu d'effet de lixiviation pour empêcher tout colmatage biologique et toute pénétration des bactéries. Les membranes semi-perméables selon l'invention comprennent un matériau polymère et un agent antimicrobien dépourvu d'effet de lixiviation qui est incorporé dans le matériau polymère et réparti de manière homogène dans ce dernier. Selon un mode de réalisation, le matériau polymère est de l'acétate de cellulose. Selon un autre mode de réalisation, qui utilise des membranes de polyamides (10) composites de film mince, l'agent antimicrobien est intégré dans une couche de polysulfone microporeuse (14) qui est placée entre un tissu de renfort (16) et un matériau de polyamide ultramince (12). L'invention concerne également le traitement de membranes semi-perméables de fibres creuses et plates composées de polysulfones et de fluorure de polyvinylidène. Ces membranes peuvent être utilisées dans des applications d'osmose inverse, d'ultrafiltration et de microfiltration.
