An improved process for the preparation of 3,4-diyhdroxybutanoic acid (1) and salts thereof from a D- or L-hexose source is described. The process uses an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydroxide and peroxide oxidizing agent to convert the D- or L-hexose source to (1) by maintaining a low concentration of base and oxidizing agent in the reaction mixture at any one time and by maintaining a temperature between about 25 °C and 80 °C. Upon acidification of the reaction mixture the 3-hydroxylactone is produced. The compound (1) is useful as a chemical intermediate to naturally occurring fatty acids and is used to prepare 3,4- dihydroxybutanoic acid-gamma-lactone (2) and furanone (3), particularly steroisomers of these compounds.
Procédé amélioré de préparation d'acide 3,4-dihydroxybutanoïque (1) et de sels dudit acide à partir d'une source de D- ou L-hexose. Ledit procédé repose sur l'utilisation d'un hydroxyde de métal alcalin ou de métal alcalino-terreux et d'un oxydant peroxyde pour convertir la source de D- ou L-hexose en acide 3,4-dihydroxybutanoïque et sur le maintien d'une faible concentration de base et d'oxydant dans le mélange de réaction à n'importe quel moment, ainsi que sur le maintien d'une température située entre environ 25 DEG C et 80 DEG C. La 3-hydroxylactone est produite dès l'acidification du mélange de réaction. Le composé (1) est utile en tant qu'intermédiaire chimique pour des acides gras naturels et est utilisé pour préparer de la lactone gamma d'acide 3,4-dihydroxybutanoïque (2) et de la furanone (3), en particulier des stéréoisomères de ces composés.
